Charles Barwell with Lady Thatcher

Charles Barwell was President of the National Convention of the Conservative Party from 2010-2011 and was elected to that position by senior volunteers to represent members on the Party's Board.

A former Deputy Chairman of the Conservative Party in the West Midlands Region, he was Constituency Chairman in Birmingham Edgbaston for three years until 2002. An investment manager with Barclays Wealth, Charles was born in Birmingham, and educated in Worcestershire, and Connecticut USA. He was an undergraduate at the University of Manchester, and was a postgraduate at the University of Birmingham Business School.

Charles has strong trans-Atlantic links in politics, commerce and the Arts, and attended the Republican National Convention in 2008. He was a governor of international educational charity, The English-Speaking Union, for ten years until 2001, and worked with schools cross the country developing children's confidence in presentation and public speaking. 

Charles is married to Juliet who is a professional concert pianist. They have two young sons.

His outside interests are considerable and include crewing a sailing boat round Ireland, Golf, he has a handicap 12, education, he was a Governor of St Paul's RC School for Girls, and music. Charles was Deputy Chairman of the Board of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and sings in the CBSO Chorus with whom he has performed three times at the BBC Proms, and in Berlin, Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur.

Over two nights in November 2006 and again in 2007 Charles raised nearly £6000 for a homelessness social enterprise by spending two very wet and windy nights sleeping out on the streets of Birmingham. St Basils Centre helps 4000 young people each year who society has overlooked by giving them a hand up rather than a hand out.
