David Cameron's financial statement to the Party Conference

Today a statesman addressed his Party's Conference. With the global economy in turmoil and savers and homeowners across the world frightened for their family's security, David Cameron spoke to us and to the whole country to reassure us all and enourage calmness.

If Gordon Brown takes up David's offer for support in legislation, savers frightened for their life savings need not rush to take their cash out of their bank accounts ever again - because even if a poorly managed bank fails, their savings are secure.

And if bankers take up David's challenge for corporate responsibility, one of Britain's most important professions will regain the respect and trust that it once deserved.

But most importantly, having seen the harm caused by partisan political posturing in the US congress yesterday, what David Cameron did today was to bring about an end to the Punch and Judy politics in this country, and introduce a new politics of responsibility and competence.

Here in Birmingham a respectful conference stood to applaud their new statesman.
